Question:
Good Afternoon NEC Fans!
We have a question related to grounding electrode systems. If the only grounding electrode for a building is a concrete-encased electrode, are ground rods or any other grounding electrodes required to be installed?
Bill Achers
A
Answer:
Hi Bill,
Thanks for the question. Section 250.50 indicates that all grounding electrodes as described in 250.52(A)(1) through (A)(7) that are present at each building or structure served shall be bonded together to form the grounding electrode system. Where none of these grounding electrodes exist, one or more of the grounding electrodes specified in 250.52(A)(4) through (A)(8) shall be installed and used. If the concrete-encased is the only electrode present, the Code does not require additional electrodes to be installed. If any are installed, all electrodes need to be bonded together.
