Question:
Does a 50a, 208v receptacle in a commercial garage require gfci protection?
Jim Dorsey
A
Answer:
Hey Jim thanks for your question. Yes. The receptacle ratings that require GFCI protection have increased for the 2017 NEC for other than dwelling units in 210.8(B). Single phase receptacles rated 50 amperes and less and not over 150 volts to ground, and three phase receptacles rated 100 amperes or less and not over 150 volts to ground must have GFCI protection depending on their location as described in the subdivisions of 210.8(B). Garages are covered by 210.8(B)(8).
Commercial garages have a GFCI rule for 125 volt 15 and 20 ampere receptacles used for certain purposes in 511.12 but that wording does not specifically address (modify) the rule in 210.8(B).
