Question:
I’m curious about disconnecting means. Is there a rule that states if a piece of equipment is required to have a disconnect switch rather than accepting the disconnecting means of a cord and plug connection (besides in the cases of accessibility and section 430.109 E & F of 2014 NEC)? I’m not questioning if a piece of equipment should have a disconnecting means, rather if a specific type of disconnecting means is required – and in what situations.
Thank you, Cale A. McKoon,
A
Answer:
Hey Cale thanks for your question. There are many rules about disconnecting means but they vary depending on the type of equipment. Disconnecting means for motors must be of the type stated in 430.109 and include switches, circuit breakers, controllers and attachment plugs, receptacles and cord connectors. Many have specific conditions or limitations as detailed in that section. The disconnecting means for appliances are covered in Article 422, Part III and also have many variations. If you have a question about specific application or specific equipment please send it in.
