Question:
Hi Charlie,
Is it a code violation to install an 500 gallon LP Gas tank within 3’ of an electrical panel? Both the tank and the panel are located outside and the work area is not in violation as the tank is located off to the side. This tank is not used for filling any other smaller tanks so no fill openings etc. to be concerned with. There is a permanent ½” copper line piped from this tank to feed the house approximately 75’ away.

Answer:
Hey Reggie thanks for your question. The NEC does not specifically provide a separation requirement between electric equipment and gas equipment. There are requirements in NFPA 58, Liquified Petroleum Gas Code, for the installation of those types of gas systems. Chapter 6 of that Code provides rules about gas regulator discharge points and ignition source controls. We suggest you contact the gas supply company in addition to the Fire Marshal, Building Official, and other local authorities for their rules.
