Question:

My question is in regards to LED light strips and their drivers mounted to the underside of a furniture bench and desk. These items are in a Hotel. I am being told that, "The driver is NOT a listed piece of equipment.- the drivers are a recognized component. This is different than being Listed/Certified as required by NEC 411.4" and that the lighting and power source must comply with NEC 411.4 A or B – that is a LISTED SYSTEM or an ASSEMBLY OF LISTED PARTS. What does this mean? There was a Class 2 driver provided, but had power leads/cords spliced to the wires coming from transformer. I was told that was not acceptable. I now have a driver that says on the back label 12V 0-2.5A LED Driver and says Class B. Is this the correct transformer to use?

A

Answer:

Hey Matt thanks for your question. Low voltage lighting must be either listed as a system as stated in 411.4(A) or be assembled from the listed parts in 411.4(B). Recognized components can be found in listed assemblies but as you mention recognized components are not a substitute for a listed product. The instructions provided with the systems or parts should include the necessary information for installation.
