Question:
Greetings CQD,
What is the difference between the term UL approved and UL listed? An inspector keeps referring to the equipment being UL approved.
Thanks.

Answer:
Hi Mark,
The inspector is not using the correct terminology. UL is a standards development organization that is also involved in product certification (listing). There are several product certification organizations in addition to UL. The correct term to use is listed by a qualified electrical testing laboratory, as indicated in 90.7. Inspectors often base their approvals on the use of listed equipment. The Code does have many specific product listing requirements throughout. Approval is acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction, as stated in Section 110.2.
Hope this is useful.
