Question:
Hello, and thanks for providing this NEC Discussion. I read it each morning as I start the day. My question is about the equipment installed outside and subject to rain. What is the difference between rainproof and rain-tight?
Thanks,
Mark Spencer

Answer:
Hi Mark,
Thanks for being a valued subscriber to the CQD. The difference between the two types of enclosures is apparent in the definitions in NEC Article 100. Rainproof means the equipment is constructed, protected, or treated to prevent rain from interfering with the successful operation of the apparatus under specified test conditions. Rain-tight means the equipment is constructed or protected so that exposure to a beating rain will not result in water entrance under specified test conditions.
