Question:
Hello Code Experts. I have a 5kV switch installed indoors and would like to know the minimum width required in front of the equipment. The equipment is 42 inches wide. Thanks for any guidance.

Answer:
Hi Bernie,
Thanks for the question. Well, you know what they say about experts, there are many out there. We will do our best based on the information provided. The minimum width required is 36 inches, but not less than the equipment (which is known in this case), so for this installation, minimum width of 42 inches is required. See Section 110.32. For the minimum depth, see Section 110.34 and Table 110.34(A). This installation is above 1000 volts, so the installation rules are found in NEC Article 110, Part III.
