Question:
Thanks for the daily dose of Code information.
I just bought an electric vehicle. Is a separate circuit required for an electric vehicle charging equipment that is portable, and plugs in to a 120 volt receptacle? I've been told I can plug it in to an existing receptacle in the garage.
Your opinion would be appreciated.

Answer:
Hi Cindy,
Many people are purchasing electric vehicles. With that comes the need for charging equipment. The NEC does require an individual branch circuit for all electric vehicle supply equipment. These are continuous duty loads. See Section 625. 40.
