Question:
Good Morning,
Related to the provisions for article 501 (requirements for electrical in class I areas), are there any exceptions to 501 related to the voltage being used in the area (24 Volt DC or less)? This question is specifically for a class I Div. 2 area.
Andrew Hood
A
Answer:
Hello Andrew,
Thanks for the question. The requirements for electrical wiring and equipment in Class I locations apply regardless of the voltage. Low voltage systems can produce enough energy for the ignition of explosive atmospheres. See Section 500.7 for various protection techniques that are suitable for either Class I or Class II locations. This includes low energy circuits such as non-incendive circuits and intrinsically safe circuits.
