Question:
Good Morning CQD and thanks for your service to the industry. For residential electric car chargers that are wired direct or hardwired, do they need a disconnecting means within sight of, or can a breaker lock out at the panel be sufficient.
Chris Didion
A
Answer:
Hello Chris and thanks for participating. Electric vehicle supply equipment is required to be listed so there should be installation instructions that must be followed to comply with Section 110.3(B). EVSE often includes a disconnecting means that is an integral part of the equipment. A breaker could serve as the required disconnecting means, and if not in sight of the equipment a provision for adding a lock at the circuit breaker meeting the requirements in 110.25 is often applied. Section 625.43 indicates that for equipment rated more than 60 amperes or more than 150 volts to ground, the disconnecting means shall be provided and installed in a readily accessible location. The disconnecting means shall be lockable open in accordance with 110.25.
