Good Morning Tony,
Good question. AHJ stands for the Authority Having Jurisdiction. Article 100 of the NEC defines the AHJ as: An organization, office, or individual responsible for enforcing the requirements of a code or standard, or for approving equipment, materials, an installation, or procedure.
The AHJ can be different in each jurisdiction. In some areas, the local municipal inspectors are the AHJ for their municipality, other areas, the State is the AHJ, and each local municipality is granted permission by the State to inspect installations on their behalf. For these reasons, it is always advisable to check with your local enforcement authority for information on the permitting/inspection process in the area where you are working.
