Question:
Hello,
Selling my house and failed a city required inspection due to my garage door opener outlet (ceiling location). They want it to be ground-level GFCI. Is this beyond the current code, or has this code been updated?
Thanks,
Joelle Molino

Answer:
Greetings Joelle,
Thanks for the question. We will attempt to provide some clarification here. The NEC requires that a receptacle be located in each bay of the garage. See Section 210.52(G)(1). These required receptacles are required to be installed not less than 5.5 feet above the floor, and they are also required to be GFCI protected, as indicated in 210.8(A)(2). A receptacle installed in the ceiling for a garage door opener is not a required receptacle. GFCI protective devices are required to be readily accessible, as indicated in 210.8.
