Question:
Good Morning, I truly appreciate the service CQD provides, thank you for that service. My understanding is that the NEC is a minimum standard to protect both life and property; when the NEC is more stringent than a manufacturer’s instruction, which one prevails?
Thanks,
Mark Davis

Answer:
Mark, thank you for participating in the Code Question of Day. You are correct in your understanding, the NEC™️ establishes the minimum installation criteria for electrical conductors and equipment. When installing electrical equipment the manufacturer's installation instructions must be followed, but those instructions cannot supersede the minimum installation criteria set by the NEC™️. When the installation instructions contradict the requirements of the NEC, the more restrictive of the two is what must be followed. Guidance on acceptability, approval of electrical equipment, and Listing and Labeling, can be found in Section 110.2 and 110.3 of the NEC™️.
