Question:
Hello Code friends, regarding the CQD from a few days ago about Federal Pacific Circuit Breakers. Another facet to this question, aside from the
NEC® is the Insurance companies. Many insurance companies have elected not to insure a home with a Federal Pacific style panel in it. Almost every electrician I know, will suggest homeowners upgrade the service when these types of breakers are present, not necessarily because of the
NEC®. Thanks Bill.

Answer:
Bill, thanks for the additional information regarding Federal Pacific Breakers. The
NEC® provides us with the minimum electrical installation requirements. This means meeting the requirements of the
NEC® is essentially the least one can do, before the installation is non-compliant/illegal. It is always nice to hear the electrical community is going above and beyond the
NEC® requirements. As you stated, the property insurance industry has a long history of influencing safety and fire prevention, either thru regulations or their own underwriting efforts.
