Question:

Hi Code Question of Day! Is it permitted to use a standard “Non-Tapered” LFMC Connector and a threaded rigid coupling to make a transition fitting? Happy New Year, David Attla.

Answer:

David, Happy New Year to you as well. Making “Homemade” transition fittings becomes a slippery slope. Section 110.2 requires electrical installations to approved. This approval is typically done by an AHJ by on the methods in Section110.3(A) (1)-(8). Even if the taper on the treads of the LFMC and the rigid coupling are the same, it is likely that the two fittings have not been evaluated for use in the manner you are describing. It would be difficult to approve the installation without evidence that the fittings are going perform. The good news is, there are more listed transition fittings readily available from various manufacturers now, then there has ever been. The need to make “homemade” transition fittings is no longer necessary.
