Question:
Greetings Code Question of the Day,
Is the IMC pipe suitable as a grounding conductor, or do I need to install a green wire in the pipe? Thanks for your guidance.

Happy New Year from Code Question of the Day!
Hi Paul,
Thanks for the question. Intermediate Metal Conduit (IMC) is recognized in the NEC as an equipment grounding conductor. See Sections 342.60 and 250.118(3). That said, the NEC is the minimum, so one must do at least that much. Sometimes specifications on projects or local electrical amendments are more restrictive than the NEC minimums. If installed in the IMC, the equipment grounding conductor would need to meet one of the identification provisions in Section 250.119. I hope this is helpful.
