Question:
Dear Code Question of the Day,
Does the Code address not cutting (ringing) the strands of larger conductors when stripping them for termination. This seems to happen a lot especially on aluminum conductors. Where in the NEC is this addressed? I believe the connection would be only listed for wire sizes that fit?

Answer:
Hi Frank,
Thanks for the question. Section 110.14(A) generally addresses making connections in a manner that does not damage the conductor. Cutting or ringing the conductor to fit in a terminal lug is causing damage to the conductor. Section 110.12 also requires electrical equipment to be installed in a neat and workmanlike manner. Cutting strands off and ringing conductors causes damage and impacts the integrity of the standard conductor, and on many levels, would not be considered workmanlike by many in the business, especially the AHJ. Hope this is helpful.
