Question:
Hello CQD,
I am an electrical contractor I was inspecting a brand new house for a friend. In the basement I found two New work nail-on PVC boxes were used for switch boxes but what they did was mount them on a wall by removing the Nails and putting screws through the back of the Box. I can't find the code reference that says this is a violation can you help?

Answer:
Hello Gene,
Sounds like the wrong box is used for the application described. These boxes are usually listed and installation instructions are included. So Section 110.3(B) could apply. The inspector has the responsibility for approval as indicated in 90.4. Many inspectors typically base their approval on the use of listed equipment and being installed as the instructions indicate, without modifications.
