Question:
Dear CQD, thanks for all your help-I always start my day by reading the CQD. Does the NEC
® require the refrigerator in a kitchen to be GFCI protected? Are there any exceptions? Thanks Barry Singor
A
Answer:
Hello Barry, so glad to hear you enjoy the CQD, and thank you for your question. The 2020 NEC® does not specifically require GFCI protection for a refrigerator. However, if the receptacle is also in one of the locations listed in Section(s) 210.8(A)(1)-(11) then GFCI protection would be required.
It is also worth mentioning that the requirements in Section 210.8(A) changed in the 2023 edition of the NEC®. Specifically, Section 210.8(A)(6) now requires GFCI protection for all receptacles in a Kitchen meeting the voltage rating and supply rating in Section 210.8(A).
