Question:

Hello Code Friends. We wired a new hotel and installed all the receptacles and switches in the guest rooms were installed as shown per the electrical plan. We did the final walk thru with the Inspector, and he is telling us the receptacles are in the wrong spots. I was under the impression that in other then dwelling-units, receptacle location was a design issue and not regulated by the NEC®. Does the NEC® require specific receptacle locations for hotel guest rooms? Thanks, Ted Roland
A

Answer:

Hi Ted, the NEC does have specific requirements in Article 210 that address Guest Rooms, & Guest Suites of Hotels and Motels. Section 210.60(A) specifies that the guest rooms of a hotel must meet the receptacles spacing requirements of 210.52(A) for bedrooms and living areas, and 210.52(D) for bathrooms. The receptacle spacing of a Hotel Guest Room is the same as a Dwelling Unit for those spaces. In fact, they are even more restrictive, as section 210.60(B) goes on to say, not only do the receptacles have to meet the aforementioned spacing requirements, but you also have to consider the furniture layout. At least 2 of those required receptacles must be readily accessible as defined in Art 100.
