Question:
Good morning, Charlie's gang! We recently stumbled upon a panelboard that had some "heat marks" above the A-Phase bus: the inside-back of the tub had some discoloration. Does the NEC provide any guidance on inspecting if the panelboard is safe to continue using? Should the AHJ get involved? My instinct is to just scrap everything but can't find the justification in the code. Cheers, Curtis
A
Answer:
Hello Curtis, thank you for participating in the CQD.
Sections 110.7, 110.12(B) & 110.14(A) provides some guidance on this, and may help in you in providing justification of the repair.
It is always advisable to reach out to the AHJ, as the local jurisdiction may have local ordinances/codes that would reinforce the need for replacement. Additionally, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has a free publication on the reconditioning of equipment, NEMA CS 100-2020, Technical Position on Reconditioned Equipment.
