The option of reconditioning existing equipment (instead of purchasing new equipment) exists today. Proper electrical equipment reconditioning provides a means to extend the life of electrical products and an opportunity in some cases to update installed equipment with the latest performance and safety features. However, not all components of the electrical infrastructure are candidates for reconditioning. The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has developed a policy on reconditioned equipment that should serve to establish consistency in how this process is handled in the field. New rules have been incorporated in the 2020 National Electrical Code (NEC) to assist owners, installers, inspectors and others that encounter applications of reconditioned electrical equipment.
